CLARO STEAL THE YORKSHIRE SHOW

     This year’s Yorkshire Show was the biggest and best yet at the Yorkshire Showground with more livestock, exhibits and food courts than ever before.

A new addition to the show this year was the Hound Judging. Over 50 Hound Kennels from across the country showed their packs full of fine bred beagles and fox hounds. However, it was our locals, the Claro Beagles that impressed the judges and snatched prizes for all but two out of their six show hounds. A rosette was also presented to James Tennent, Kennel Huntsman as they were the local pack.

Harry Cornell, 15, a pupil at Harrogate Grammar School was Whipper-In for the Claro. He was ecstatic with the result. “This is the first time I’ve ever been invited to Whip-In for the Claro at such an important event,  I loved it! The pack did really well and won not only rosettes, but recognition for our local pack in Nidderdale.”

Last Monday, Roger Atherton, head of the planning department at Harrogate Borough Council has finally, after a long hard struggle, has approved the application to build a Tesco Supermarket on Skipton Road, Harrogate.

            After years of deliberation, Tesco gets the go ahead and Harrogatonions are thrilled!  Tesco is the most popular supermarket in the UK and has recently won ‘Best Green Retailer of the year ‘ and  the Grocer 33 award for Customer Service, so it is no wonder why this supermarket has been so sought after.

            The supermarket is going to be placed just off Skipton Road (A59) in Harrogate where the Gasworks used to be. “This spot has been abandoned for years and is in such a prime location being that it’s over the road from B&Q and Pets at Home. All your day to day shopping essentials within two minutes’ walk of each other, brilliant!” says John Moore, site and planning manager for Tesco.

            This build is even more exciting now that Tesco have issued a statement that they are launching £500 million price-cutting campaign to compete with their main rivals, ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.  Chief executive Richard Brasher said “Tesco will reduce the prices of 3,000 everyday products - such as milk, bread and fruit and vegetables.”

Physical Education? Not for this Nation

As time keeps ticking on towards the Olympics, sport is ever growing in our minds especially with the Government making reports in June 2011 about Physical Education failing in schools correlating with the rising numbers of obesity. So the Harrogate Journal is taking a closer look into these allegations and finding out exactly what your thoughts are.

Harrogate Grammar School are in the local sporting limelight currently due to the construction of a multi-purpose sports pitch. (See article below) With this exciting news, we have spoken to both staff and students about they’re overall view about P.E.

Harrogate Grammar School students have recently had a whole schools sports day which “went down a treat this year”. This year’s event was apparently “like no other” and “an outstanding day full of energy and good sportsmanship” said Mr Brown, Head of Sports at HGS. In order

In order to encourage wider participation traditional track and field events were supplemented with fun team activities such as; Volleyball, Tug o’ War, Rounders, Tennis, and Frisbee.

Ben Smith, a year 8 student says “This sports day is so much better than my primary school sports day and I love the running! I wish we could race all the time in P.E instead of gymnastics!”

Unfortunately the wider involvement and enthusiasm which our Reporters found at Harrogate Grammar School cannot be found at other schools across the region to this level but perhaps they can learn from this leading example and triumph in some sporting success.

Grounds 4 Success, Success!

• Harrogate Grammar School have raised £250,000 for the Multi-Purpose all weather astro-pitch. After two years of fund-raising and saving, the target was made and construction is under way
• I have taken some photos of the pitch in progress and have some photos of some students volunteering at a charity ball to raise money.
• More photos will be taken for what the pitch looks like when finished.
• Interviews will be taken from sports teachers too.

Ladies group raises £525 to fight cancer

DOLLY Mixtures Ladies Group raised £525 for Macmillan Cancer Support at a mind, body and spirit afternoon at the Homestead in Clifton.

The Homestead donated the pavilion and sandwiches, overseen by Richard Bothamly, head gardener, and Pig and Pastries, of Bishopthorpe, donated cupcakes.

Who – Dolly Mixtures Ladies Group

What – Raised £525 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

When – Spirit Afternoon
